5 Tips For Staining Your Deck This Spring

  • Prep, prep, prep! The majority of your deck staining time should be in the preparation phase. Make sure the deck is clean by using a pressure washer and a wood cleanser that can take care of any mildew or other stains that have accumulated on the deck surface. If you want to start fresh, you’ll need to use a stain stripper. The main thing is to make sure the appearance of the deck is even prior to the new stain application as any spots will become glaringly obvious after staining.
  • Consider using a wood brightener. A wood brightener is a product that opens the surface of the wood and allows stain to better penetrate into the grain. A wood brightener can make even an old weathered deck look years newer. Plus, the extra stain absorption that wood brighteners allow means you’ll have a longer lasting application.
  • Read the directions carefully. You could spend hours looking for the right color and brand, but whatever you choose, make sure you read the directions carefully. Different brands will have instructions specifically tailored to their proprietary formulas, and what works in terms of preparation and application for one, might not work as well for another. Read twice, stain once.
  • Use a brush. Though sprayers and rollers will get the job done, seriously consider using a brush instead. Brushes are much better at getting into all the grooves in the wood, and allow for better absorption of the stain. This will result in a better looking deck, and a more durable coating. Plus, you don’t need to get down on your hands and knees with a brush, as there are several long handle, wide brushes you can use to comfortably perform the job.
  • Take the time to sit back and enjoy a job well done! You’ve earned it.

Hire a reputable moving company – Seriously, this is money well spent. You will thank yourself later. Hiring a company to move you will relieve so much stress on moving day. This is especially important if you are buying one house and selling another is a relatively short time span. You won’t have to beg friends and family to help, or deal with the stress of not having enough hands to get the job done in time. While someone else moves your belongings, you can be at your new house unpacking, or the old house cleaning up.

The more mass that the fence has, the better it will be at reflecting noises. Stone, brick, or concrete is the best material for the job. However, these options tend to be a little impractical for use in a residential setting. A more practical and cost-effective option is wood.

Staining is probably the most popular option for fence coating. Stain is absorbed into the fence, so chipping does not occur like it does with painting. Another benefit to stain, is that you will still be able to see the lovely grain patterns that often get covered by paint products. Re-staining is less labor intensive because you will not need to remove the entire previous coatings.
