The fun and sun of summer can quickly turn to muck and yuck once the temperature creeps into the 90’s and above. With all that heat and direct sun, sometimes your yard can feel like you could fry an egg on your lawn! So what’s a summer loving deck owner to do? Add some shade!

A wonderful way to dress up your deck and add some cool cover over the hot summer months is by adding a shade. And oh, the options you have! Pinterest is you friend here, and after we run through some basics, we warn you, you may spend a few hours on it dreaming up ideas.
Sun Sails
They are a modern and easy way to add shade and style to your deck. The basics: They can be simple to install but you need to make sure you track the sun to optimize it’s shade. It can be a hassle to get them up or down so once they’re up, it’s up for the season. They are not waterproof, so always make sure you angle them so that water runs off to avoid any pooling. They are a seasonal product and you will need to put them away for the winter. When you do, always make sure it is dry, and that you store it in a dry location to prevent mildew. We will do a more in depth blog about them later this month so check back soon!
Free Standing Canopy With Retractable Shade:
If your deck is large or if you want to add some vertical structural interest, you might want to consider a canopy with a retractable shade. They can give you hanging space for lights, plants and or bird feeders, while allowing you the flexibility of sliding your shade into place as needed. To add even more shade or privacy, you can even attach privacy screens to the sides.
Cantilever Umbrella:
If you don’t want something permanent, but that will adjust to the angle of the sun, we suggest a classic Cantilever Umbrella. They are portable and you can move and angle them as you need. Some even have hooks or plugs build in to accommodate ambient lighting. We always suggest closing them when you are done however, as they can be easily knocked over with a strong gust of wind.
If you are building or thinking about building a new deck, and want to use some of these ideas always check with your builder. They should have the experience to to guide you, especially if you are thinking about adding a canopy onto your deck in the future. We would also recommend maintenance free decking materials for your deck as it will allow you to not worry about upkeep with a canopy in the long term, and you won’t have to worry about removing the canopy to replace any weathered wood.

Hire a reputable moving company – Seriously, this is money well spent. You will thank yourself later. Hiring a company to move you will relieve so much stress on moving day. This is especially important if you are buying one house and selling another is a relatively short time span. You won’t have to beg friends and family to help, or deal with the stress of not having enough hands to get the job done in time. While someone else moves your belongings, you can be at your new house unpacking, or the old house cleaning up.

When someone has a backyard fence installed, they typically want to enclose as much of their backyard space as possible. This naturally involves going up to property lines (or as close as allowed by your city and association). The more mass that the fence has, the better it will be at reflecting noises. Stone, brick, or concrete is the best material for the job. However, these options tend to be a little impractical for use in a residential setting. A more practical and cost-effective option is wood.

Staining is probably the most popular option for fence coating. Stain is absorbed into the fence, so chipping does not occur like it does with painting. Another benefit to stain, is that you will still be able to see the lovely grain patterns that often get covered by paint products. Re-staining is less labor intensive because you will not need to remove the entire previous coatings.
