With a sweltering Memorial Day weekend just passed, hopefully you found the time to get out and enjoy your backyard and deck outside of those time of peak heat. But what if you wanted to enjoy your space all day, but the temperature is unbearable? Here are a few ideas to make your deck a bit more comfortable:

  1. The obvious thing to do is add some shade. Awnings, deck sails, and covered pergolas make great additions to decks and patio. Awnings are especially convenient as many can be retracted to allow full sun. Deck sails are another great option that are easy to install/remove, and can even be angled depending on the path of the sun over your space. Of course, there’s also always the humble umbrella that’s inexpensive, movable, and easy to store.

  2. Overhead fans are another great way to keep heat on the deck from becoming too oppressive. These take more planning to install and use unless you have a screened in or covered porch, but they can be integrated into open air decks as well. These keep the breeze flowing around you and your guests and make the heat more tolerable. Plus, the added airflow has a tendency to help keep insects away from the space.

  3. You thought hot tubs were only for cool nights and seasons? If you’re hot tub has a good range of temperature control, you can use it to beat the heat too. Either turn the heating unit off, or keep the temperature at its lowest setting, and you can comfortably sit and enjoy your deck, cocktail in hand. Plus, unlike a pool, hot tubs require far less upkeep, and you may not need a fenced in area around it, but be sure to check your local codes and homeowners insurance. This is one addition that truly makes a deck usable year round.

Don’t let the weather dictate your schedule of enjoyment. A little enhancement here or there can make decks suitable for just about any condition!

Hire a reputable moving company – Seriously, this is money well spent. You will thank yourself later. Hiring a company to move you will relieve so much stress on moving day. This is especially important if you are buying one house and selling another is a relatively short time span. You won’t have to beg friends and family to help, or deal with the stress of not having enough hands to get the job done in time. While someone else moves your belongings, you can be at your new house unpacking, or the old house cleaning up.

When someone has a backyard fence installed, they typically want to enclose as much of their backyard space as possible. This naturally involves going up to property lines (or as close as allowed by your city and association). In order to come extremely close to property lines, it needs to be established precisely where they are. Here a few methods that can be used.

The more mass that the fence has, the better it will be at reflecting noises. Stone, brick, or concrete is the best material for the job. However, these options tend to be a little impractical for use in a residential setting. A more practical and cost-effective option is wood.

Staining is probably the most popular option for fence coating. Stain is absorbed into the fence, so chipping does not occur like it does with painting. Another benefit to stain, is that you will still be able to see the lovely grain patterns that often get covered by paint products. Re-staining is less labor intensive because you will not need to remove the entire previous coatings.
