So you’ve had the patio furniture out for a while now, we’ve had some rain, and now you’re starting to see some orange-brown spots show up. Don’t panic. Rust is easy to deal with if you catch it early. It’s even pretty easy to prevent in the first place. Follow these tips depending on your situation to keep your furniture in tip-top shape.

  1. If you’ve just started to notice small spots of surface rust, a quick once over with a scouring pad should take care of it. Don’t use one that’s too abrasive tough. One of those blue ones you’d typically use on your dishes will work nicely. If the rust seems a bit stubborn, try using some lemon juice on the spot. Don’t scrub too hard, especially if the surface is painted. Damaged paint or a scratched metal surface will rust even easier in the future.
  2. If the rust has had a chance to take hold, and there’s even a bit of pitting in the metal, you’ll need to use either some steel wool, a scraper(especially if there’s any bubbled up paint), or a wire brush to make sure you’ve cleared the rust out of the open pores. Any left over and you’ll just be dealing with it again before too long. In these instances, the lemon juice may not cut it, so try some WD-40 or a commercial grade rust remover. If the metal surface has been altered by the rust, you’ll want to consider either repainting the spot, or using some type of clear coat or other rust preventer.
  3. Repainting is the best way to protect against rust. Use a rust proof primer first, and then apply an oil-based paint of your color choice. Oil based paints are typically superior for rust prevention. Don’t neglect moveable joints either. Though you won’t want to paint these, it’s a good idea to keep them liberally greased. This not only keeps them working smoothly, but the grease also helps keep water away from the surface and out of the joint entirely, thus acting as a strong rust barrier.

And finally, if it’s older furniture, you might consider leaving a bit of the rust, especially if it’s just a surface stain and not in an area where you’re likely to touch it. Weathered furniture with touches of imperfection can add character to your space and can be worth embracing!

Hire a reputable moving company – Seriously, this is money well spent. You will thank yourself later. Hiring a company to move you will relieve so much stress on moving day. This is especially important if you are buying one house and selling another is a relatively short time span. You won’t have to beg friends and family to help, or deal with the stress of not having enough hands to get the job done in time. While someone else moves your belongings, you can be at your new house unpacking, or the old house cleaning up.

When someone has a backyard fence installed, they typically want to enclose as much of their backyard space as possible. This naturally involves going up to property lines (or as close as allowed by your city and association). In order to come extremely close to property lines, it needs to be established precisely where they are. Here a few methods that can be used.

The more mass that the fence has, the better it will be at reflecting noises. Stone, brick, or concrete is the best material for the job. However, these options tend to be a little impractical for use in a residential setting. A more practical and cost-effective option is wood.

Staining is probably the most popular option for fence coating. Stain is absorbed into the fence, so chipping does not occur like it does with painting. Another benefit to stain, is that you will still be able to see the lovely grain patterns that often get covered by paint products. Re-staining is less labor intensive because you will not need to remove the entire previous coatings.
