There are a lot of good reasons to get a new fence or to update an aging fence, like keeping your children and pets safe, or adding privacy to your yard, garden, deck or outdoor space. It can also help raise your home value. Whatever your reason, if you are considering or will be considering a new fence you should really think about polyvinyl, or PVC, fencing.

What are vinyl and PVC fencing, and are they the same thing? PVC is made out of vinyl, and while there are multiple kinds of vinyl, the kinds used for fencing closely resemble each other. Both terms are used interchangeably in the fencing world because you can expect just about the same usability, durability and ease of use from both with little difference. Most locations use the terms interchangeably and will understand if you use one term for the other.

What are the benefits? There are many, but the biggest draw to this product is the maintenance free care and longevity. Maintenance free means that it won’t warp, splinter or fade like wood, or rust like metal. Most brands carry warranties or guarantees.  A lot of the products nowadays also come in a variety of colors and textures. If you like the look of wood, but want the maintenance free care of PVC/vinyl fencing, it can be done. If you need height, transparency, or full privacy or anything in between, it can also be accomplished with this product. Need to get the dirt off or clean it after the winter season, just hose it down or wipe it clean with a rag and some mild soap.

So what are the drawbacks? While there aren’t many there are a few that need to be noted. The upfront cost can be more than a standard wood fence, however, over time you do save more money as you don’t need to replace and maintain parts like a standard wood fence. The look also keeps for longer making the fence look newer/nicer longer. PVC can expand and contract due to weather fluctuations, and that can make it weaker or brittle, but most brands offer extended or lifetime warranties. Plus, wood can also have this problem. However, PVC fencing does have a longer lifespan than wood, or even some metal fences (without the possibility of rust).

Hire a reputable moving company – Seriously, this is money well spent. You will thank yourself later. Hiring a company to move you will relieve so much stress on moving day. This is especially important if you are buying one house and selling another is a relatively short time span. You won’t have to beg friends and family to help, or deal with the stress of not having enough hands to get the job done in time. While someone else moves your belongings, you can be at your new house unpacking, or the old house cleaning up.

The more mass that the fence has, the better it will be at reflecting noises. Stone, brick, or concrete is the best material for the job. However, these options tend to be a little impractical for use in a residential setting. A more practical and cost-effective option is wood.

Staining is probably the most popular option for fence coating. Stain is absorbed into the fence, so chipping does not occur like it does with painting. Another benefit to stain, is that you will still be able to see the lovely grain patterns that often get covered by paint products. Re-staining is less labor intensive because you will not need to remove the entire previous coatings.
